According to psychologist David Bartram, who identified the Great Eight Competencies, an organizing and executing individual “plans and works in a systematic and organized way, follows directions and procedures, focuses on customer satisfaction, and [offers] a quality service or product to the agreed standards.” 

Individuals strong in organizing and executing can adhere to systems and mechanize an organization’s goals to maximize output. These traits are closely linked to “conscientiousness” according to the Big Five Personality Traits (OCEAN) model’s definition, which involves “organizing details, structuring tasks, [and] driving success.”

Organizing and Executing in the Workplace

Meticulous and consistent, the organized and execution-oriented employee is motivated by the transactional elements of their work. These professionals are often suited to be executives and mid-level managers in individual departments, aligning their missions with the organization, entrepreneurs who need the skills to scale their businesses by executing strategy, and consultants hired to execute a plan to increase an organization’s revenue. 

Professionals strong in organizing and executing are results-oriented and uniquely equipped to bridge the gap between strategy and execution. They are often viewed in contrast to their creative counterparts, which are conceptually oriented and abstract-thinking. 

In a global survey of 700 executives across various industries, only 8% of company leaders were viewed as excelling in both strategies, defined by vision and execution. 

These managerial positions' delegation skills and ability to design jobs ensure “employees have the right mix of control, accountability, influence, and support to succeed.” They also have the communication skills and conscientiousness to explain tasks, set expectations, and see their teams through to the finish line. 

Is Organizing and Executing a Learnable Trait?

First and foremost, communication strategy is integral so that everyone in an organization knows their responsibilities. Breaking assignments into sections ultimately streamlines the process until it becomes familiar and procedural. 

To determine whether an organization is effectively hitting its strategy goals — and whether its strategy is positively impacting the business — it’s essential to have a clear monitoring process. Without measurement, it’s impossible to know if the strategy is the right one.

Overall, habit, repetition, goal setting, a realistic timeline, and breaking down parts are all ways that organizing and executing are learnable traits. 

Successfully executing complex strategies is so critical that professionals with a track record of organizational strategy implementation are often in high demand. Therefore, business leaders need to be adept at designing jobs that align with specific elements of their organizations’ strategies. 

Articulating the strategy in human terms — what capabilities the company will need to build and what skills are required to do so — not only helps the company focus on how to develop the right talent, but it allows individuals to understand how their role fits into the overall strategy and allows them to see their work in a much more fundamentally connected way.
